Curriculum
Alfio Lorenzo Torrisi is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics for Life Sciences, Environment and Cultural Heritage at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Enna “Kore”, Italy. His teaching and research activities are mainly carried out within degree programmes in the medical and health sciences area.
His research activity has a strongly interdisciplinary profile, with main interests in applied physics for biomedical applications, materials science, nanotechnologies, radiation-matter interaction, radiation applications in medicine and cultural heritage, spectroscopic techniques and advanced imaging methods.
He has carried out research activities at several international institutions, including University College London, the Czech Academy of Sciences and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and has contributed to several national and European research projects, including PNRR-funded projects.
His current research focuses on the development, characterization and application of materials and nanomaterials for biomedical purposes, laser-synthesized carbon dots, optical and spectroscopic characterization of biomaterials and polymers, and radiation-matter interaction.
He holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Full Professor and Associate Professor in Applied Physics, Teaching and History of Physics, and in Experimental Physics of Matter.
His scientific production includes over 200 publications, mainly in international peer-reviewed journals, with more than 1,800 citations and an h-index of 23, according to Scopus database.
Alfio Torrisi received his M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Catania (Italy) in 2013.
In 2017 he earned his European Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Optoelectronics — within the Erasmus Mundus framework — jointly from the Military University of Technology in Warsaw (Poland) and the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic), working on the development and characterization of compact soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet microscopy prototypes based on gas-puff target sources.
In 2018 he was awarded a Fellowship as Associate Researcher at University College London (UCL, UK), within the Advanced X-Ray Imaging group at the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, contributing to the development of X-ray microscopy systems for investigations on tumoral tissues.
From 2018 to 2020 he carried out postdoctoral research at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Řež, Prague, Czech Republic), where he worked with ion beam lines at the Tandetron accelerator on materials science and applied physics, with a focus on PIXE, RBS, and ERDA analysis techniques.
From 2020 to 2022 he held a Junior Researcher position at the University of Salento and the INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), Lecce section, participating in several national and international scientific projects.
From 2022 to 2023 he was a Research Fellow at the University of Bari, Department of Physics, working on quantum and correlation plenoptic imaging. He subsequently joined the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IMM) as a Researcher, contributing to the design and development of power devices and radiation detectors.
From October 2023 to June 2026 he has been a Researcher and Lecturer in Applied Physics at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the Kore University of Enna (Italy)
Since June 2026 he is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the Kore University of Enna (Italy)
He is the Scientific Referent within the CHERNE Network — Cooperation for Higher Education on Radiological and Nuclear Engineering — an international network of academic institutions active in higher education in nuclear, radiological and radiation protection fields.
