Innovative Technologies in Biomedical Sciences

Information

The PhD Program in Innovative Technologies in Biomedical Sciences aims to train highly qualified professionals in basic research and applicative evaluation in the diagnostic, therapeutic and, in general, health protection fields – of the experimental evidence derived from it and associated with data from clinical practice. To this end, the training project integrates the methodologies and approaches typical of biological sciences applied to human well-being with those characterizing basic medicine, personalized medicine and precision medicine. Furthermore, the training program promotes the translation of such integrated information in the industrial and applicative fields in accordance with emerging technologies in the field of biomedicine, bioengineering and biomaterials engineering. In accordance with the PNRR within Mission 4 “Education and research” – Component 2 “From research to business”, Investment 3.3 “Introduction of innovative doctorates that meet the innovation needs of businesses and promote the hiring of researchers by businesses”, the training project, divided into three distinct years, will provide students with both basic and clinical research methods, as well as information on biomaterials, biomedical devices and medical-surgical devices, as well as evidence on the technological applications of specific biological signals in the field of diagnostics and therapy. By following this training path, the aim is to develop in students the scientific skills and technical abilities essential to face the challenges of the future in the medical-health field, using a multidisciplinary, transversal and integrated approach. This training path has a significant impact in both academic and industrial fields, not only in terms of identifying and monitoring the health status of the population, but also in terms of the clinical-care management of the patient through the evaluation, implementation or realization of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches based on biological and clinical evidence that make use of the support of cutting-edge biomaterials, devices and medical-surgical aids. To this end, courses and integrative activities on topics in the field of “4-P medicine”, bio-engineering and bioinformatics are planned. Furthermore, continuous interaction with the professors on aspects related to the specific research topics carried out by the doctoral students will be guaranteed with specifically planned events, such as lab-meetings. The training project also takes care of the typical communication aspects of scientific research and ensures the training of figures with broad autonomy in the capacity for critical research and project management through the activation of information events on these topics and interactive and group teaching activities, such as the Journal Club. In all training areas, the path in the three planned years encourages intra-university collaboration and promotes comparison and cooperation with institutions, structures and research laboratories, including foreign ones, as well as with clinical centers and, above all, with industrial entities – present at a territorial level – that share the same applicative interests. This project responds to the continuous and growing academic, clinical and industrial demand for specialists capable of developing, starting from biological evidence, precise and personalized clinical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that take into account the overall management of the well-being of individuals and the community.
