Strategic and Security Sciences

The course

The three-year degree course in Strategic and Security Sciences, belonging to the Degree Class L/DS, is unique not only in Sicily, but from Rome down. It is a course that has immediately shown the ability to attract the interest of young people, but also of professionals, who wish to deepen their training in the sectors of protection of the strategic interests of the Italian Republic, the European Union and private security. It arises from new questions identified in the potential market, given the growing demand for professional figures specialized in the field of security.

Career opportunities

In the public sector, the privileged sectors are those of the armed forces, the police forces and all careers related to the defense of national and European interests, including professional profiles related to the diplomatic career. To this end, during the three-year period, a specific preparation activity for public competitions will be organized, with simulation of written tests or pre-selection tests.

In the private sector, graduates in Strategic and Security Sciences will be able to work, in command or coordination roles, in the field of private security, as well as in non-governmental organizations dedicated to humanitarian activities. Employment sectors estimated to be constantly growing because the globalized society increasingly needs professionals with security skills.

For those who, instead, wish to continue their studies after obtaining the three-year degree, there are many possibilities. First of all, they can enroll in a second level degree course of the LM/DS Master's Degree Classes in Defense and Security Sciences; they can opt for another second level degree course, after evaluating the credits earned; and, finally, they can evaluate whether to continue their studies by enrolling at Kore in the five-year single-cycle degree course in Law, given that the curricular path, especially with regard to the legal field, will be fully valued.

Internship and further skills

External internship

As is known, after the Covid-19 emergency, external internships were suspended. Even now, during the so-called Phase 2, many institutions do not allow students to carry out internships remotely, which is why, as indicated by the Rector in the letter of May 14, 2020, Prot. No. 8066, it is expected that internships can be replaced with alternative solutions in agreement with the subjects interested in the internship or by transforming the external internship – where possible – into an internal internship. However, the problem could arise that some students have not had the opportunity, in good time, to attend a sufficient number of seminars to obtain the necessary credits. This is why the Coordinator also suggests providing for the possibility – only for the duration of the emergency – of replacing 1 or 2 credits with the drafting of an additional thesis to the one required for the final exam. In particular, Prof. Ciavola suggests that, for special cases assessed by the Coordinator, the substitution of 1 or 2 credits be authorized with the presentation of a thesis prepared in agreement with one of the Course teachers who will take care of its drafting. An essay on a limited topic, no more than 10-20 pages.

Furthermore, Prof. Gevisa La Rocca points out that interested students can carry out the internal internship activity by deepening the theories of mass communication and the challenge of digital with particular reference to hashtag studies and big data related to #coronavirus. Through this activity, in particular, the student will be able to deepen: the aspects related to digital communication, social media, the contents conveyed through tweets with particular reference to the themes of risk and security, the analysis of textual data, the techniques relating to the analysis of digital content and the analysis of textual lexicon. Prof. La Rocca is the contact person for this activity, to whom students can turn.
