Laboratory of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (LIMA)

The laboratory

LIMA (Laboratory of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) operates in the field of consultancy and services offered to Industrial Engineering. It carries out teaching, theoretical and applied research and third-party work for external subjects. It includes various skills ranging from industrial technology applied to the automotive, aeronautical and naval fields, to the analysis of materials used in these fields up to integrated design.

The approaches used are both numerical-computational and experimental and involve different study methodologies such as:
  • For the numerical analysis aspect: CAD solid modeling, FEM and CFD simulation.
  • For the experimental analysis aspect: the complete characterization of the elastic-plastic behavior of conventional and composite materials.
Since 2012, the laboratory has been carrying out scientific consultancy activities in agreement or on behalf of third parties for various public and private entities operating in the field of industrial engineering. Among the main entities for which LIMA has carried out activities are: SELEX GALILEO, LEONARDO FINMECCANICA, POLITECNICO DI MILANO, FLYING LEGENDS, TRENCH. Within the LIMA laboratory it is also possible to carry out pre-degree internship activities for students of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, in particular for those in the third year of Aerospace Engineering. During the training period, students can follow and participate in the activities carried out in the laboratory, working alongside structured staff. Students can also carry out experimental and numerical research activities aimed at writing the final degree thesis.

The research

The laboratory supports interdisciplinary research topics ranging from the analysis of the mechanical behavior of materials of practical mechanical and aeronautical interest, such as composite materials and intelligent materials, to problems related to wind engineering (study of wind generators with structural and aerodynamic optimization), to the study of joints between metallic and/or composite materials, up to problems related to new Additive Manufacturing technologies.

Below is a list of the main research activities supported by the LIMA laboratory within agreements (or on behalf of third parties) and funded research projects.
