Project objectives

The need to reduce the seismic risk of the immense national cultural heritage has been dramatically highlighted by the recent seismic events that have caused the destruction of entire historical centers, testimony of the history and traditions of our country, with obvious repercussions on the economy and tourism, which is one of the major prerogatives of development possibilities of the South. The proposal aims to offer valid support to the protection and safe and conscious use of cultural heritage through the knowledge of their history and characteristics, the study and improvement of the methods of use, the definition of innovative forms of management.

The project aims to develop an IT platform, “GENESIS”, capable of collecting information on the heritage of historical-cultural interest, processing it at increasing scales of accuracy: from the territorial/urban scale (historical center), to that of a single artifact, allowing the execution of the following analyses: at a territorial scale, the simulation of damage scenarios useful for managing emergency situations; at an urban scale, the planning of seismic risk reduction interventions; at a single artifact scale, the development of structural behavior models for the evaluation of static safety and seismic vulnerability as well as of interventions that may be necessary based on the previous analysis.

The development of numerous case studies related to characteristic historical centers of the Southern Regions (demonstrators) is planned, with full-scale experimental tests, and the development of innovative products and new methodologies for the protection, preservation and conservation of historical and monumental buildings. This will allow us to provide, at a technical level, indications on intervention strategies through cost-benefit analyses that combine the need for seismic risk reduction and preservation with tourism promotion and, at a tourism level, multi-level access to information (guided tours, thematic insights, direct access to sources, etc.). This will allow us to multiply the attractiveness and competitiveness of tourism and culture according to the objectives indicated by the MIBACT Strategic Tourism Plan 2017-2022, promoting new ways of enjoying them based on the renewal and expansion of the offer and the promotion of new destinations and new products.
